Fort Beauharnois is located along Lake Pepin near Highway 61 in Minnesota, and is on the southern end of Frontenac State Park. Fort Beauharnois was built in 1727 by a French expedition from Montreal as a post to launch exploration westward in an attempt to find the route to the Pacific Ocean. The original structure was built on low ground and had to be rebuilt on higher ground in 1730. Fort Beauharnois, MN was the site of the first Roman Catholic chapel in the state of Minnesota. Today, an Ursuline convent and the Villa Maria Conference Center stand where the first fort was located. After visiting the fort, we suggest you traverse the beautiful Frontenac State Park and check out the Villa Maria complex.
