Mountain Iron, Minnesota
Mountain Iron is Part of the Iron Range Audio Tour

Mountain Iron Minnesota Tourism Information

Mountain Iron, MN as the name suggests, was built atop a mountain of iron ore. It was at Mountain Iron in 1890 where Leonidas Merritt first discovered the rich area of iron ore that would forever be known as the Mesabi Range. Mountain Iron is located along Highway 169 in northeastern Minnesota, an area known as the Iron Range. Some things to see and do in Mountain Iron include celebrating the city’s rich mining history including a Scenic Overlook at the point where Merritt first discovered iron ore, a statue of Merritt in the city center, a 1910 Baldwin Locomotive that used to haul iron ore from the mines and biking on the Mesabi Bicycle Trail, a 132 mile trail that runs from Grand Rapids to Ely, MN.
