The Red River Oxcart Trail is Part of the Brainerd Lakes Audio Tour

Red River Oxcart Trail Minnesota History

The Red River Oxcart Trails were an extensive network of trails ranging from Winnipeg in Canada throughout central and western Minnesota and the eastern region of North Dakota. The trails were mainly used as fur trading routes throughout the area beginning in the 1820’s, with its heaviest use between 1840 and 1860.  The Red River Trail routes were the main connection between St. Paul, Minnesota and the Canadian frontier areas until they were supplanted by the encroaching railroad system of the mid to late 19th century.
