The Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge is located between Highways 10 and 169, just 50 miles northwest of the Twin Cities. The Sherburne Refuge is a biologically unique area that includes tall grass prairie, oak savanna and wetland habitats, and was created in 1965 to protect and restore the St. Francis River Valley. The refuge has many recreational opportunities including the Blue Hill trail and Mahnomen hiking trail and skiing trails, fishing, wildlife observation and education about the ecosystem of the area.
